2 years ago Vic Chesnutt left us by his own devices. He left behind a legion of fans and songs that convey his unique view of the world. Vic was a prolific songwriter and influenced many artists in the Athens, GA scene and beyond. I was introduced to his music through Widespread Panic, who collaborated with Vic through the project "Brute".

It is always my great honor to bring in co-host Bob Parlocha. Bob has turned me on to so much great jazz throughout the years. Unfortunately, last Sunday Bob was not into Vic on my level.

I archived the show on Mediafire so it can be enjoyed as long as they allow it. Take a listen. I also posted a link to the interview that Vic did with "Fresh Air" and Terri Gross. It aired just 24 days before he died.

During the month of October, our good friends at Shuffle Function encouraged listeners to submit their own radio dramas, inspired by the recordings of Judson Fountain.

Coop Tom and I each wrote a drama, and we were able to produce and record one of them this week with the help of sound effects specialist Mr. Benjamin J. Findley. It is called "The Boy and His Father" and you can hear it this Sunday night at 11:30pm on KMSU.

where to start....

Let's start with this:

I spent some time last winter and this spring with local Avante-Garde groups "That's What She Said" in the KMSU studios. Our intent was to record an EP on the cheap that the group could get out to satisfy their fans. We ended up recording over 2 hours of music. Months later, after careful thought and many hours of civil debate, we've narrowed it down to 5 tracks.

Then, in June, I recorded a few tracks with singer/songwriter "Erik the Viking" on his initial trek to southern Minnesota. I've known Erik for about 10 years and it makes me so happy to still have him as a friend and to be a small part of his musical journey.

I'm calling this effort "KMSU Sessions". I'm hoping to work with local bluegrass artists "Beg For Justice" on volume 3 in a few weeks. Got ideas for another group? Lemme hear it! I've been playing trumpet in a kick ass brass band called "Bass Brand Brass Band". We've had a few small gigs so far and are stepping it up next weekend. Friday the 28th, we'll be doing a 2 hour set at Patrick's in St. Peter from 7pm-9pm. Then on Saturday the 29th, we'll be doing a short opening set for the 3 Minute Hero CD release show. We're 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, bari sax, sousaphone and drums. Think New Orleans style brass; Dirty Dozen, Youngblood, etc. Like us on facebook and stay abreast of our upcoming shows and recording. I'll be playing along side the trombone section with That's What She Said this Friday, October 21 at the What's Up in Mankato. I believe there are 4 bands that night and it's all completely FREE! Music starts at 10pm.

I am so damned excited to see the Drive-By Truckers for the second time this coming Tuesday at First Ave. If you are in need of a bad ass rock show (you know who you are), I'll see you there.

It's that time of year again, when we all get the chance to take a day off from our grueling work schedule and reflect on how nice a long weekend is. Then this guy comes to town. He mooches off your friends on your favorite watering hole's patio, harasses your friend Jerry for several hours, feeds you drinks at the local karaoke bar, and then subjects you to the crappiest pizza in town. The good news is, the next day, he sits in on your radio program and plays live in the studio for you.

Celebrating 2 years/Freedom

Following this, I spent some time with my friend Smoothy(pictured here, not actual size) at KMSU. Smoothy has been away in the mystical land of China, teaching math I failed in college to High Schoolers, in their second language. This is slightly different from me learning Calculus in college from a Native Russian teaching for the first time in English.

We also saw some great local music on the patio at Savoy and played a few tunes with local Avant-Garde originals "That's What She Said". I had a chance to hear "The Organic Cowboys" for the first time and enjoyed their high energy set to 6 patrons. Stealing the show was Mankato's "Body Politic". I waited way to long to see these guys play the best local punk I have seen in a long time. They gig every weekend so get out and catch em'. Cheers to Smooth One!

Looks like Ben Nichols will be doing this benefit gig at Grumpy's NE the day before his solo gig at the entry. Good thing Dick Balls lives within spitting distance of GNE.

Speaking of that Ben Nicholas gig, My friend Erik the Viking is meeting me at KMSU studios on June 12th for an in-studio recording. Be sure to check out the show that night for a listen of that recording. I'm hoping to cut a KMSU ep for Erik and make him go see Ben.

Speaking of speaking of...had another productive session with local Mankato avant-garde troupe "That's What She Said" in the studio this last week. We were able to lay down 6 solid tracks before Zach hits the road to Peru for 2 years! Good luck to you sir. I'll try and trow some of those recordings up on this blog in the next few days.

What an April! A very successful pledge drive was had by KMSU and we can't thank our listeners enough for stepping up and showing how much you value KMSU and it's local programming. I am honored to be a part of this station and associated with the great hosts that bring music to southern Minnesota and northern Iowa's ears.

The show featured some great new music by Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit from their album "Here We Rest", gave a listen to Radiohead's new release "The King of Limbs", and checked out some sweet music released exclusively on Record Store Day (thanks Carl!). I'm crossing my fingers for a quick interview with Jason when he comes to town to rock the Turf Club in May. Embrace the Sound also welcomed guest host Drew Lyon. Drew used to host "The Porch" on KMSU, does some great writing for the Free Press and works at your friendly local music store Tune Town. Drew brings a perfect flavor to the show and I hope to have him on many times in the future.

I also kept busy attending a few shows in April. Mike Watt and the Missingmen rocked "hyphenated man" at the Turf Club, Ray Manzarek and Roy Rogers played an intimate show at the baeutiful Paramount Theater in Austin, MN, and the PIXIES totally slayed the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium. My co-worker George got his hands on a set list from the PIXIES show and I have it hanging proudly on my board at work, you rock George!!

I had the pleasure of working with local avant-garde group "That's What She Said". They've been together for over a year in Mankato playing their unique mix of originals. They put on a heck of a live show and their dedicated fans have demanded a fix between these performances. 4 sessions in the KMSU studios produced 17 tracks at over 70 minutes of music. It is a work in progress that I hope you can be apart of when you see them in the future.

All Allman Show

Gregg Allman released a new solo album a few weeks back. Consisting of 11 old blues covers and 1 new song, written with fellow Allman Brothers band mate Warren Haynes, Low Country Blues is a fine piece of blues music. One of the best things about new music from Gregg is knowing that he is healthy and still able to do what he loves, play music. As an avid Allman Borthers fan, you don't get much guitar playing out of him on stage. With Low Country Blues you hear Gregg playing a bevy of instruments all produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett. Dr. John joins in on Piano, guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose.

I tried to put together as much cheesy Christmas music as I could this year, with a little help from the Salvation Army, Jim Baker and his Christmas slide guitar, and the Aqua Teen Hunger Force gang. I found their Christmas album last year post holiday and never even opened it up. This year it got a workout. It is a hilarious album that is sure to become an Embrace the Sound holiday tradition.

Only 3 days left till, what I predict, will be the greatest show of 2010 in Minnesota! First there's the Evening Rig from Minneapolis...

They are still taking their 2009 album, "Is Doin' Stuff" to the masses. I saw this act in December of 2008 when they opened 2 nights for Lucero at the Triple Rock, great shows. I am excited as heck to see them again.

Next is this guy, Franz Nicolay

Franz is most famously known as the Multi-Instrumentalist for The Hold Steady. He has also played with World/Inferno Friendship Society, toured with Against Me!!, as well as 3 solo albums and tons of session work. I saw Franz's last show with the Hold Steady last November at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. It was a weird show: No Booze, No Jackets. I was very stunned when I heard about his departure from the Hold Steady, but not surprised. Franz is making awesome music these days and I'm not quite sure that is the same path the rest of that band is taking. I was trying for a short interview with Micah of Two Cow Garage:

Two Cow opened for the Hold Steady. Turns out the band had van problems and time ran short before the show. I ended up having a nice conversation with Shane about their label, Suburban Home Records, touring, favorite places to play and his picks for music. He brought me over to meet Micah who was so cool about everything.

I think I can say that Weezer is back. They're new album Hurley is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums from 2010, which is not an easy slot to get to. With new music from Drive-By Truckers, the Sword, Grinderman, DEVO, the Sadies, Black Keys...Hurley does a great job of fitting in and bringing back that awesome Weezer sound, not so much Pinkerton but more Maladroit-y.

Pavement put on a great show at the Legendary Roy Wilkins last night. They went through all of Erik Larson's favorites and even played Range Life for me. I'll take some time to find a setlist later today. Malkmus made reference to "seeing pavement for the last time" and "pavement's gone", but the rest of the band sure looked like they were enjoying themselves. Cheers to the performance, very solid.

Thanks for tuning in! I had a great time playing some Amphetamine Reptile Records artists in honor of their 25th anniversary. I had a great time at the bash staying in the shade, drinking more Crispin Cider than a man should, and watching Boss Hog tear it up. The night culminated with a shirtless dude onstage mooning the crowd during the encore and then the band leaving. I like akward stage departures, lets you know it's not staged.

Suburban Home Records is the label many of our favorite bands call home; Drag the River, The Takers, Look Mexico, Tim Barry, Two Cow Garage are just a few of the groups making great music for this little Denver label. Every few months they put together a mixtape and send it out in their mailorders. Recently they have switched to distribution through InterPunk. So they are self-distributing this Volume of the mixtape series electronically.

This coming Sunday, July 18, at 11pm Embrace the Sound is Celebrating its 1 year anniversary by going live. We will attempt live radio for the first time. I'll be joined by my two favorite co-hosts, Ben and Tom, of Patrick's trivia fame. We'll chat, play some songs, take your calls requests and dedications, as well as give away a few special prizes.

Thank you for listening over the past year. KMSU is just an awesome radio station and I couldn't be happier to be a part of that community. It has been a dream come true for this young music lover, and I hope to be around for many more.

Oh No! It's DEVO!

I had a chance to voice my dis pleasures about the off stage antics at the MN Zoo DEVO show this week. I started a topic on the DEVO community page, read all about it.

There is no denying that the 70 minutes DEVO was onstage was one of the best live music performances I have ever seen. Tons of energy and a band that loves to play the music they made. But coming off a nearly 2 1/2 hour Tool show the previous Thursday, I was quite irritated by the shortness of the concert. And that the copy of Duty Now For The Future I purchased on ebay a while back had New Traditionalists inside!

Oh well, I still love DEVO...except Shout. I'll post more pics and a few vids I took in the next few days...

KMSU Listener Appreciation Show

I knew this day was going to be huge. Never even had the chance to see the Fleshtones or The Ledge and to get that chance for free in Mankato was a real treat. It embodied the reason why I love KMSU so much, normal good people making awesome things happen in a great community. Thank you a thousand times to Tim and Shelley for all their hard work. You two do more for Mankato than the people know. Thanks also to Gully, Karen, The Red Sky Lounge, Tune Town, all the volunteers at KMSU and most of all...you the listener! Here is a bunch of pics I was able to get that day. The best is the Legendary Stardust Cowboy playing the trumpet my Mother bought me 20 years ago, thanks Mom!!

The day started by listening to Shuffle Function and hearing a call out for a bugle. Seems as if the Ledge forgot to pack his. The old straight bugles are tough to come by, I suggested he needed to get in contact with a boy scout. I could offer my trumpet, which seemed to work well enough.

Next up was the in-store performance at Tune Town. I proper Rock-Star fashion, it started at 5pm instead of 4pm. But, what a great opportunity to spend some time browsing at the store, where I picked up an awesome Pavement DVD. After their in-store performance, which is the only in-store I've ever been to, I knew the show tonight would be one not to miss.

Then the show...The Ledge blew our socks off in only the way he can and the Altamont Boys tore it up! Down to his Dark Knights, the Ledge left the stage and stuck around to socialize and autograph whatever was handed to him. " I never autographed so many plates!" The Fleshtones ripped it up! I even got in on the push-up man schtick. Let it be known that these guys are rock stars! I can't wait for them to come back and rock Southern Minnesota again. I got some autographs and an impromptu picture with Klaus Fluoride, bass player for the Altamont Boys and founding member of the Dead Kennedys, after an extensive conversation about his daughter, his cell phone, and Embrace the Sound.

The single greatest night of music I have ever experienced in Mankato.

Exile on Main St. reissues

After almost 40 years, the Rolling Stones are once again pushing Exile on Main St. A remastered version was released and can be yours...for a price. There is a CD re-issue, 180 gram double vinyl reissue, 2 CD reissue that includes 10 bonus tracks, some unreleased, then there is a 2 CD/DVD set with a DVD containing footage from an upcoming documentary. The DVD is not available as a stand alone. And finally there is the LP/CDs/DVD combo package for the cost of a 1998 Pontiac. I'll take my copy from Hymies.

Last Saturday was record store day! I made out fairly awesome with the new Built to Spill 7", Rolling Stones 7" of unreleased material from the Exile On Main Street reissue, Drive-By Truckers 7", Jimi Live, and the Wilco Kicking Television box set. That puppy was spendy, but it's what I wanted the most on vinyl. Shelley got the only Flamings Lips album, but my friend Mike maybe bought 2 at the Fetus...enh? No Hold Steady, guess we'll just have to wait a few more weeks. I'll be spinning these on the show this week!

Making my first trek to Target field tomorrow and couldn't be more excited for a day off with friends and to check out the hottest team in baseball!

This album was recently pressed and released by Suburban Home Records/Vinyl Collective's Vinyl Cooperative. The Coop was started with the idea of bringing together share holders' money to combine efforts to put out great albums that have never been released on vinyl. This is the Co-op's 3rd release. 333 pressed on black and 667 on Mustard Yellow. This baby's black. How do I win this album?, you may ask? I returned home from the Manchester Orchestra concert last night just in time to hear the show. Sounded like I was doing battle with Bob Parlocha again, no doubt a result of the recent switch from CST to CDT. My favorite part is when we talk at the same time.

MO was great! I had not heard much of them and was pleasantly surprised to hear the sounds of a full fledged indie rock band. I could have gone without the sea of Blackberry and iPhone screens...kids these days. Also, opening act The Features was a treat to watch as well. Tough staff at the Varsity, within a few minutes of the house lights coming on, my friends and I were asked to leave as we chatted finishing our beers...

Next up, Hackensaw Boys at the Cabooze and Deadbolt at Station 4.

Had a great time in St. Paul yesterday at the Happy Gnome's 3rd annual Firkin Fest. What's a Firkin? It's a cask conditioned ale that has fresh yeast added to it in the secondary fermentation stage usually dry hopped with a little something special. Firkins are a great way for the breweries and brewers to try new things and show off some of their favorite recipes. I give first prize to Great Divide's Oak Aged Yeti, just yum.

Heading back to Minneapolis to see Manchester Orchestra this evening, wishing I was at 7th Street for Tapes 'N Tapes, glad I'm not at Roy Wilkins for Alice in Chains. Here's last week's playlist. RIP Vic Chesnutt (1964-2009)

Vic died while in a muscle relaxer induced coma last week on Christmas Day. He had been in the coma for nearly 2 days. It’s unclear if the overdose was intentional, but it is clear that the loss of Vic has touched many people.
I first learned of his music through fellow Athens, GA musicians Widespread Panic. They have collaborated with Vic on 2 records under the moniker “Brute” and covered “Aunt Avis” on their 1997 release Bombs and Butterflies. His music is sad, true to his feelings and at times very dark. Vic had been in a wheelchair since an auto accident at the age of 18. At 26, fellow Athens musician Michael Stipe produced his first album Little. Over the next 19 years he would release 14 more solo albums, as well as contributing to albums released by Elf Power and The Amorphous Strums. His latest album, At The Cut, featured his second work with Fugazi Vocalist and guitarist Guy Picciotto. The song “Flirted With You All My Life” eludes to Vic’s past battles with suicide and depression.
I had the great pleasure of seeing him perform at the Turf Club in the early winter of 2006. He opened for Jonathan Richman to an enthusiastic crowd. His dark mood quickly changed the crowd into a quiet attentive audience. He was definitely intoxicated, but captivating and hauntingly poetic. It was almost as if he was trying to be the complete opposite of the headlining act. Thank you Vic, you will be missed.

Nirvana - Live at Reading

This week on the show I featured a song off of Nirvana's newest album, Live at Reading. It's actually a DVD/CD combo that showcases their performance at the UK's 1992 Reading Festival. The show is phenomenal, with all 3 members performing at the peak of their careers with Nirvana. The sound on this recording is amazing and the DVD is a must watch. as much as I dislike the idea of this, the Live at Reading concert is a must have for anyone who enjoyed Nirvana's music.

Drag the River has been around for a while now, and their music is a bad ass as ever. They have a new "collection" CD (don't dare call it greatest hits) coming out to help them spread their music around Europe this winter. It's called Primer and it's not a bad intro to the band. Purchase it by heading over to www.suburbanhomerecords.com and be sure to check out Chad and Jon's solo albums as well...

All Saints Day is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic church and it conveniently falls on a Sunday this year, so no extra trip to church necessary. When I think of a band that goes well with Sainthood, Lucero is the one. If you were unable to attend a service or the Lucero show at the Varsity last week, the show this week was a great substitute. Many thanks to Mr. Jason Kuehl for recording the show and not getting to play any of the music he brought.
